Trading Journal First Sports Trading Diary Entry
Trading Journal First Sports Trading Diary Entry
Trading Journal First Sports Trading Diary Entry is an area in which I plan to update on a daily basis my sports trading progress.
I started sports trading (mainly football matches) on Bet Fair at the beginning of February 2012. I missed out on a fabulous offer for new sports traders to get a free £25 bet - the first time they start sports trading on Bet Fair. So to makesure you don’t miss out on this wonderful offer;
Claim a risk free £25 free bet at Bet Fair, click Bet Fair £25 bet. Make sure when you join the site, that you use or see the code HU4XE6MTR in the relevant voucher area to get your risk free £25 bet.
If HU4XE6MTR doesn’t show in the relevant box when you are filling in the joining page, you might not get your £25 free bet and that would be a shame to miss eh?
The reason I’ve decided to do this daily sports trading journal is two fold;
Firstly I post a football trading entry on the day’s in-play football coupon on a near daily basis, to the main Football Trader blog. It therefore isn’t too much extra time for me to add an entry on how I’m doing sports trading wise on a daily basis.
Secondly, in some respects this sports trading diary is an area which I can use to keep my sports trading on the ‘straight and narrow’, to ensure that although I imagine at the moment no one other than I is actually reading this Football Trading blog, it will at least be a public place on which I will record my daily trading bank figure.
A sports trading journal giving details of my increase or I suppose decrease of my trading bank to focus my attention and ensure that when trading football or any other sports, my trading remains within the boundaries that I have set myself on the Sports Trading page.
Working to the strategy that limits my sports trading risks to exposure in the in-play market to acceptable risk and reward level, I am using the exit strategy of when the Trade will give 5% return of the initial stake or if it has been longer than 5 minutes since my initial trade was matched.
The reason why I’m working to the above, is that when going through my notes over the last few weeks, it is quite obvious that I have been leaving my trades open for too long and not working to a strict exit strategy.
I have now developed a strict exit strategy whilst sports trading, that I intend stick to at all cost; to reduce my risk in having my trades in open in-play for too long and enforcing a strict timescale and ensure that unless I was extremely unlucky the percentage profit was lowered and made easily achievable, so I could exit the trade with the best possible chance of being in profit.
I started using this sports trading exit strategy on Saturday 10th March 2012. At that point I had lost two thirds of my initial trading bank and had started to question my sports trading strategy and tactics. On inspection of my daily sports trading diary that I was keeping noting records of trades etc, I realised that I was being unrealistic with my time spent exposed to risk in open play; I was also being ‘greedy’ in my target percentage profit goals on each trade.
Sports trading in the in-play market can give some big swings percentage profit wise – if you time your trades correctly, you can be looking at a green-up sign telling you that you’ve made a potential profit virtually immediately you place a trade in the in-play market. The temptation therefore, is to leave your trade open too long becoming mesmerized by the green up figure, as it shows an ever increasing green up amount.
So to give today’s starting bank £109.93 – this figure was down to the £103 mark on Saturday morning, so it has already increased from that. But as there was no viewable record, I will start my sports trading journal with the bank figure of £109.93.
I will now vow to update this daily (on the days that I do trade) as a record of my sports trading. It will be my sports trading diary!

Sports Trading
Sports trading for me has been an interesting journey so far. One thing that I’ve attempted to do in the last few days or so, is to break the old gambling mindset and to attempt to develop a sports trading mindset instead.
In the olds days before I started trading sports online at Bet Fair, I used to have a punt on any sports match that took my interest – generally these would have been football and/or rugby matches in the UK.
Getting out of the mindset of only concentrating on the end result; instead looking for potential trades in the in-play market has been quite difficult. I still found myself ‘gambling’ on the particular sports trade in question, thinking I could leave my trades ‘open’ for too long, before trading out of them for a profit.
Staying in a open sports trading position for too long opens you up to an increased risk of the trade not working out to your advantage – leave it up to the players on the pitch to come good for us, just doesn’t work!
I have therefore been experimenting with the timings and or profit level of each particular trade, and found that on several ‘losing’ trades, had I had got out of the market at the 5 minute point from start of trade, I would have ‘won’ more sports trading positions than otherwise and would have kept my initial stake, instead of losing it in an open sports trading position that had actually turned into a gamble / punt!
To solve and help me keep focused on this, I have decided to lower my percentage target for each individual trade to 5% of stake. I was originally aiming for 10% of stake and was finding that I was actually trading out at higher than that – thus potentially leaving my sports trade open to fail due to gambling on the position, rather than seeing it as a sports trading opportunity and trading out and moving to the next football trading opportunity that arises.
I’m thinking about keeping a football trading diary on here, as I seem to be updating the site everyday (well almost!) with the day’s current in-play football coupon. Keeping a record of my journey in a diary format, will probably serve as an additional motivation to stick to my new 5% or 5 minutes rule.
Everything I read online about sports trading indicates that the first hurdle each football / sports trader needs to overcome is to break the habit of ‘gambling’ on their sports trades and instead treat it as a ‘risk’ for a set period of time / or set amount of percentage profit. Once either of these are met, then the sports trade should be closed and the profit banked. If you cross the line and leave the sports trade open, you are ‘sports gambling’ not sports trading.
In which case, getting into the mindset of a sports trader instead of a gambler, when sports trading requires each individual to come up with a strategy that they have worked out for when best to make a trade, and then once a sports trade has been opened, they need to have a clearly defined exit strategy for that particular trade in order to make sports trading as successful as possible.
I have therefore decided on my exit strategy from now on;
Get out of the particular sports trade in question once I’ve made 5% profit on my stake, or once 5 minutes time has elapsed.
This rule has been printed off on to an a4 piece of paper and stuck to the wall by my desk. The nag note on it has been shortened to Trade 5% or 5 Mins it has been printed off in large font and bold-ed to remind me of my sports trading strategy that I intend to keep to from now on.
It is of course for the successful sports trading positions that I have open, these rules are not strictly for the times when a particular trade has enjoyed the rub of the green during the period of time I’ve allotted, so not specifically for times the actions of the players on the pitch have done us a favour; or conversly, when lady luck has gone against us and our trade has gone in the red zone. We need at these times to think about exiting the trade and reducing our potential losses.
So basically I’m saying that when sports trading, in the few weeks since I’ve been doing it; I have discovered that unlike the usual method of taking a punt on a team and gambling on the result, we need to have an exit strategy for our sports trades regardless of the result, that will also leave us hopefully in profit regardless of the result.
What methods do you use when developing a strategy for sports trading? Is your sports trading strategy the same or different from mine percentage or time wise? Feel free to comment below with anything that you feel is relevant with regards to sports trading.

Apologies for not loading up an in-play football coupon for Sunday – had a day off and spent it with the family, so didn’t have any time for any football trading.
I’ve been managing my trades through the wonderful Geeks Toy free trading software; if you haven’t tried it, then I suggest you read my review of The Geeks Toy and download a copy – you won’t be sorry!

A bigger in play football coupon than yesterday, as things gear up for the weekend.
Some fabulous matches last night in Europe – I wasn’t expecting Man Untited to lose… In the ‘old days’ I would have just have gone into the bookie and backed them to win. Last night though I backed both teams to score and laid it off after Rooney’s goal for a profit; I then jumped on and backed Athletic De Bilbao when they went 3:1 up – expected the Man U fans to be exiting the trades in disgust. I laid off just before full time, only to find Man Utd scored a second. I once again backed Bilbao as the odds jumped from 1.03/5 up to 1.11 and as there was only a few seconds left, I decided to hld out until the end of the match.
Anyway, I hope you found something to profit on yesterday and hopefully there will be more of the same today!

A shorter in play football coupon than yesterday, but at least yesterday’s evening in play coupon didn’t suffer in the same way as Tuesday’s in-play football coupon and all matches actually stayed in play instead of being suspended like on Tuesday!
Did anyone get any joy from the women’s final between Germany and Japan? It was a real yo-yo game with Germany throwing away a two nil lead after I’d backed them… Eventually they came good after a valiant fight back from Japan.
Once again there was loads of money on this Women’s game. I had backed Germany several times during this competition and so let the trade ride for a while as I was sure they’d come good. Bit naughty I know, as I’m supposed to be trading not betting – I have smacked myself on the wrists, rest assured!
Plenty of European football Europa action this evening eight games in total that are bound to have large amounts of liquidity in their markets.

The Geeks Toy
The Geeks Toy
The Geeks Toy is the second betfair trading bot that I have downloaded to trial. For my review of The Geeks Toy, please read below.
The Geeks Toy is a fully functional free betfair trading software. Yep, you read that right, it is a FREE fully functional betfair trading software, that has all of the features of most of the all singing all dancing betfair trading apps that you would have to usually pay for.
If the above hasn’t already made you click on their site to download this wonderful piece of free software, then give yourself a slap around the head and head off to The Geeks Toy immediately… Ok are you back and have you downloaded it? Good, now read below for my review of The Geeks Toy.
The Geeks Toy itself is downloaded from the main website, (which is centred around a forum) at which users of The Geeks Toy post hints and tips on Bet Fair trading and attempt to help each other with strategies etc on using The Geeks Toy in order to make profitable trades on Bet Fair.
The site itself has many The Geeks Toy set-up videos and self help videos that you can watch, this makes the process of using The Geeks Toy pretty easy. To be honest, the set up and menu will be pretty familiar to users of Bet Fair and then it’s just a case of getting used to the various options that you can have showing whilst using the Bet Fair trading software.
Once you have installed The Geeks Toy, it creates a desktop icon and a start menu icon; so you can find it easily each time you want to trade on betfair. When you click on the icon, you login using your betfair username and password. The Geeks Toy is an authorised app for betfair and is listed in their directory.
I have been using The Geeks Toy now for a few days and for those of us used to using betfair, the interface is easy and intuitive. The Geeks Toy comes with a detailed help menu built in, so if there’s anything that you are unsure of when using The Geeks Toy, then assistance is just a click away.
Also The Geeks Toy software is built around right clicking with your mouse in menus that you may be unsure about, or right clicking to get a display of additional options that can be displayed / used when running the software.
Last but not least, in the top left of any menu that you are in with The Geeks Toy software, there is a question mark sign. If you need to, you can click the question mark and the software automatically opens up the help file in the relevant area of the document fully explaining the area that you are looking at. I like the fact that this opens automatically to the right and doesn’t block your view. If therefore you are in a trade and suddenly need clarification of anything with regards to the software, the trading screen doesn’t get blocked and you can refresh your memory whilst trading!
As mentioned above, The Geeks Toy website itself is built around a forum, so if there’s ever any questions about it’s use, other forum members are always at hand to help. The Geek himself is also active on the forum and answers questions posted by users and/or clarifies any answers that may have been given by other users that may be a little unclear.
I have also emailed the support / contact address for The Geeks Toy to ask a few questions, and had a reply within a day – so if there’s anything that you need further explanation on, the support for the The Geeks Toy betfair trading software is first class.
Last but not least, you can run The Geeks Toy in training mode whilst you get used to it – you can then try it out without risking any money – although as you’ll see from the image below, the first time I tried The Geeks Toy only using the minimum £2 Bet Fair trades to the total of £8, I ‘greened up’ for 82p; which is 10% interest and most definitely more than I’d have earned had I left eight quid in the bank or building society for years!
There are various options once you login to the The Geeks Toy Bet Fair trading software interface. I basically set The Geeks Toy trading software up as instructed in the help manual / videos. I then saved my set up as a profile, so I don’t have to do it again – I just click to load up my previously arranged profile on The Geeks Toy and I’m set to go.
Of course you can set The Geeks Toy up to your requirements and also enter your usual ‘back’ and ‘lay’ amounts to be saved as a default in the drop down prices area, so you don’t have to re-enter them each time you decided to enter a trade on the back or lay side.
On the left hand side of the Bet Fair trading software when The Geeks Toy is loaded up, you will find all the usual markets listed in Bet Fair that you would expect to see. To load up a market it’s basically a case of selecting it in the The Geeks Toy menu and then all the matches will open up for that market. You then choose the match that you want and this is then displayed in the main screen area. This is a bit like if you had been manually using Bet Fair and selected the current day’s Football Fixtures or the current day’s In Play Football Coupon. It’ll be an area that you’re already familiar with in any case I am sure.
You then select the football match that currently interests you and the market for that football match that you wish to make a trade in. So the fixture has an expandable or fold-able view depending on what you want to see.
One thing that I think is very clever about The Geeks Toy, is that when you select the market that you are interested in, the current back and lay odds for that market open up in a separate box. You can then ‘pin’ that box to stay in view on your screen whatever you are doing. So you can then reduce the main Geeks Toy menu, but keep the box in view on whatever you are currently working on / looking at on your computer. The box is small enough to stick up in one of the corners of your screen, so it doesn’t inhibit your work, but is there for you immediately if the need arises for you to use it.
The Geeks Toy Green Up
The main screen area of The Geeks Toy gives you access to either ladder or grid or both views, you can use these in the ways as described in the manual. Grid view gives you what you’d expect to see in Betfair itself and ladder view gives you the same market information but in ladder format.
There is also a graph that automatically appears on the left main menu and changes automatically to show you various statistics of the team you currently have your mouse hovering over. This area also gives you loads of facts and figures to show you the movement of money, so you can get some idea as to where the money in that particular market is.
To place a back or lay bet is also very easy, just a click of a button and you can choose whether to go with the current market value, or try to squeeze a few extra points out of it with a cheeky low lay or high back to see whether it’s accepted, before gradually reducing it down to what the market is currently offering. Using this feature you’d be surprised if you’ve only used the main Bet Fair site, how easy it is to get better odds and therefore more profit from a trade – than if you just ‘took’ the current market offering.
The ‘greening up’ button in The Geeks Toy that appears after you’ve made a trade, makes hedging a breeze. Exiting a trade with profit, without having to work out what amounts to back or lay off, as the software does all the hard work for you. The Geeks Toy automatically shows you a figure in Green or Red on several of the screens that you will have open to show your current position. If it’s at a level at which you want to trade out and green up, then you just click the amount and it automatically sorts out the back or lay price that you need to use in order to guarantee that amount of profit – or if the market has moved against you, you can click the figure that appears in red to automatically trade out at a loss amount that is acceptable to you and move on to your next trade.
I am very impressed with The Geeks Toy, the fact that it is free makes it even more impressive. There is of course an option when you load the Bet Fair trading software up, to donate some cash to The Geek as a ‘thank you’ for creating such a wonderful piece of software. This is something I am sure you will want to do as soon as you’ve got used to it and have made a few profitable trades – won’t you?
Give The Geeks Toy try today and see if you like it by clicking The Geeks Toy, the only other thing that you will need to be up and running is a Bet Fair account and if you click Bet Fair you will receive a £25 free bet!

Don’t know what was up with Bet Fair last night, but most of the UK matches seemed to be ‘suspended’ for in-play trading. All worked out for the good though as it meant I managed to watch the cracking Arsenal v Milan game… Bad luck Arsenal – what a match!

The in-play football coupon for 6th March 2012 is a bigger in play coupon than the one we had yesterday. There’s two champion’s league matches at 19:45 Arsenal v AC Milan and Benfica v Zenit St Petersburg, which are bound to be the day’s ‘big hitters’ as far as total money backed and laid is concerned.
One thing that has surprised me this last few days, is the amount of money riding on the women’s international football that’s also being played at the moment.
